We are thrilled to welcome artist Jenny Grant, traveling all the way from her home in Sweden to Asheville’s River Arts District, for this beautiful, soulful mixed media workshop at ArtPlay.

Workshop Description:
Would you like to create faces that feel alive, expressive, and full of soul? In this immersive workshop, Jenny will guide you step-by-step through her layered mixed media process—from the first playful marks to a finished face filled with feeling.
Working on both paper and stretched canvas, we’ll build rich, textured backgrounds using paper collage, acrylic paint, mediums, and inks. From there, Jenny will show you a simple, intuitive approach to drawing and painting faces, using transparent layers to gradually bring each one to life. And then comes the magic: the eyes, where so much of the emotion and personality begin to emerge.
Along the way, Jenny will share her favorite techniques for creating grunge and texture, working with transparent layers, and keeping your process loose and expressive so your artwork stays alive. We’ll soften the inner critic, let go of perfectionism, and learn to embrace the beautiful, messy middle of making.
This is a tactile, playful, and wonderfully imperfect process—an invitation to trust yourself, follow your curiosity, and see where the layers lead.
No previous experience is necessary. Whether you’re brand new to mixed media or an experienced artist looking to loosen up and explore a new approach, Jenny’s workshop offers plenty of room to play, experiment, and discover your own creative voice.
