Sacred Circles:
Watercolor, Acrylic Inks & Soul Renewal Retreat
October 20-24, 2027
LAKE SANTEETLAH, NORTH CAROLINA
AT BEAUTIFUL LAKE SANTEETLAH
A creative retreat held on the wild, unspoiled waters of Lake Santeetlah where forest, shoreline, and stillness invite us to slow down and see more clearly.
Return to yourself. Let the lake lead the way.
There are places that stay with us long after we leave. The quiet of the mountains, the shimmer of moonlight on the water, the laughter shared around a table, the unexpected discoveries that happen when we finally give ourselves room to breathe, play, and create.
Sacred Circles is an invitation to return to that feeling.

YOUR RETREAT ARTIST
Artist, teacher, and guide, Krista Brock creates spaces where creativity becomes a path to presence, wonder, and personal renewal.
After a life-changing stroke in 2020 left her unable to create, she found her way back through simple daily practices of noticing… walking in nature, observing light and shadow, journaling, and painting with watercolor. What began as a personal journey of healing became a deeper understanding of creativity as something far more than artistic skill: a way of paying attention to life.
Today, Krista leads retreats and workshops that blend intuitive watercolor, acrylic ink, art journaling, mindfulness, and nature-inspired exploration. Her approach invites participants to release perfectionism, trust their curiosity, and reconnect with their own creative voice.
She believes that wonder is always available to us, that creativity belongs to everyone, and that it is never too late to begin again.
YOUR LAKEFRONT SETTING:
Gathering on the beautiful waters of Lake Santeetlah, we’ll spend four nights immersed in the natural beauty of the Nantahala National Forest, surrounded by autumn color, mountain air, and the kind of spaciousness that everyday life rarely allows. This year brings a new chapter for our gathering, with the intimate, lakefront setting of Lake Santeetlah Lodge adding another layer of beauty and serenity to the experience. We’ll come together at Cove House for our creative sessions, shared lunches, and special moments around the fire, while enjoying the warmth and hospitality of the lodge for our stay and select shared meals.
Mid to late October is leaf season in Western North Carolina!

Through intuitive watercolor and acrylic inks, writing, journaling, layering, and playful experimentation, we’ll follow curiosity rather than a predetermined outcome. My approach weaves together writing, noticing, concealing, revealing, and responding—allowing words, colors, and unexpected marks to become invitations into the next step. You don’t need to arrive with an idea or a plan. I’ll offer gentle prompts, techniques, and encouragement to help you move beyond the blank page, quiet the inner critic, and trust what begins to emerge.

“During our time together, we’ll gather for slow, mindful walks in nature—what I call wonder walks. These unhurried, meditative wanderings invite us to notice the shapes of clouds, the texture of bark, shifting shadows, and the shimmer of light on water. We’ll pause often—sometimes in silence, sometimes with a guided reflection or visualization—entering the art of noticing and remembering that beauty and insight live in ordinary moments. These gentle grounding practices quiet the mind and open the creative channel.
These walks are also where inspiration is gathered. You may collect a fallen leaf, feather, or flower, or pause to sketch, write, or paint what’s calling to you—the pattern of a tree, the color of the water, the way morning light moves across the ground.”~ Krista
For many, the discoveries made here continue long after the retreat ends.
“Before the retreat, I liked making art but never knew what to make - inspiration was running low! After the retreat, I’ve made art every day and made some of my favorite pieces. I can’t thank you enough!”
~ Miranda, Sacred Circles guest
There will be room for creative exploration and reflection, for conversation and connection, and for those beautiful in-between moments when the experience becomes about so much more than the work on the page. Because some of the most meaningful discoveries happen when we stop trying to make something happen and allow ourselves to be present with what is.
YOUR STUDIO SETTING:
Four nights accommodation at Lake Santeetlah Lodge
Nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina, this beautiful 9 bedroom lodge is located right on the lake. Wake up to gorgeous mountain and stunning lake views! The lodge is an easy 2 hour drive from downtown Asheville. In addition to the lodge, three retreat spots will be available for accommodation at Cove House, a lakefront home where our art-making will happen each day.
Daily creative practices with Krista
We will begin each day with a gentle grounding practice - led by Krista- a soft invitation to settle into your body, quiet your mind, and open your creative voice.
Daily mixed media art-making with Krista
Throughout our four days together, we’ll explore intuitive watercolor, acrylic inks, and portal painting through layers of color, expressive marks, and playful experimentation. Guided invitations, journaling, personal intentions, and reflection will help you follow your curiosity, discover emerging symbols and ideas, and develop artwork that feels uniquely yours.
You’ll leave with a meaningful collection of intuitive artwork, along with creative practices and rituals to support ongoing inspiration and personal renewal. Along the way, you’ll share stories, build connections, and enjoy the possibility of lasting friendships with other women.
A wide array of beautiful, varied art supplies at your disposal throughout the retreat.
Krista will be bringing much of what you will need for all of your creativity! In advance of the retreat, Krista will also provide you with a minimal list of basic (economical) supplies to bring along.
Daily Gathering Circles
Each day, we will gather in creative community by forming a circle to hold our intention of honoring one another’s creative spirit and creating a safe container within which everyone feels free to share and be seen wherever we are on our creative journey.
Inspiration from Nature
80% of the lake’s shoreline is undeveloped, giving us plentiful, lush beauty + tranquility, vast horizons, deep hues of blue & green and big, open sky. In this setting, you will have no shortage of natural beauty to draw ideas and inspiration from for your color palettes, forms and subjects. We invite you to allow the unspoiled natural surroundings to fuel your choices & imagination throughout the retreat.
Community and Connection
Throughout the retreat, we will enjoy creative time together, via art-making, meals, lake outings on the boat, happy hour and downtime together on the screened porches. You will also have the opportunity for nature walks or your own private time as you choose, when you need a little downtime.
Excursions in Beautiful Nature ~ Nantahala National Forest
Pontoon cruises to enjoy the beauty of the season on the lake will be offered several times throughout the retreat, weather permitting. An inspiring, moderate hike in the nearby Joyce Kilmer Old Growth Forest will also be offered for those interested.
Delicious & Nourishing Food
Daily hot breakfasts, catered lunches, a special welcome dinner on arrival day, + refreshing beverages and nourishing snacks throughout each day are included with this retreat. On the first night, we will gather for a happy hour and a special chef-prepared dinner to welcome you!
What’s Included
What’s not Included
Transportation to and from the retreat, as well as a few supplementary/ economical art supplies - beyond the essential art materials that Krista will provide - are not included in your registration. Dinners will be enjoyed at your leisure at the lodge’s on-site restaurant, Willow Tree, owned and operated by the talented chef Shay Anderson. While dinner is not included in the retreat price, we’ll have a special lakefront table reserved for our group each evening, creating a lovely opportunity to gather, share a meal, and continue connecting with one another. Krista & Kristen will join you for several of these dinners as well.
You don’t need to be an experienced artist or know anything about intuitive art-making. Come as you are, bring your curiosity, and let yourself be surprised by what becomes possible when you create in an environment rooted in encouragement rather than judgment.
Perhaps you’ll leave with a new way of approaching your art. Perhaps you’ll carry home a little more trust in yourself, a renewed sense of possibility, or memories of moonlit water and conversations that stay with you long afterward.
Or perhaps, as so often happens at Sacred Circles, the most meaningful part will be something you couldn’t have planned.
We’ll make room for it all.
“An outstanding experience”
“This retreat went way beyond any expectations I had. Krista was so open and genuine about her artistic journey, blending that beautifully with her instructions for each session. She was always there to offer support, guidance, and encouragement, helping me see how making space for intuitive process art can enrich all aspects of artistic expression. I've posted the phrases “It's just paper” and “Art is a friend” in my creative space as reminders for when I get stuck in my head.
Kristen, the ArtPlay host, was spot on with excellent meals, a schedule that balanced creative work and downtime, and personal touches that made everyone feel so welcome. Krista and Kristen shared unique perspectives and gave us several gifts that spoke of kindness, thoughtfulness, and their joy in artistic expression.
The location was so awesome, with lakefront views, places to sit and enjoy the outdoors, and an inviting indoor sitting area around the fireplace. The sleeping accommodations were relaxing and comfortable. Dana was such a lovely addition to the retreat, and I really loved the conversations during meals, breaks, and evenings around the fire. The impromptu game night was so much fun!
It was an outstanding experience”.

“The retreat will open up new ways of thinking about art and positively change you.”
“Kristen and Krista crafted a wonderful retreat, full of exploration and rejuvenation. From the moment we walked into the beautiful lake retreat house, the relaxing, creative tone was set and we were immersed in warmth and intention. Kristen put so much forethought into the details and included many beautiful touches, large and small, to enhance our experience and the programming. Through Krista's inspiring and gentle guidance, women of various backgrounds and artistic skills explored interesting ways to create art without a plan (or without setting out to create a masterpiece) - feeling safe to try new techniques and feeling our way into art. Within a short period, we formed a nurturing and encouraging community. The retreat will open up new ways of thinking about art and positively change you. I highly recommend it.

Welcome! I’m Kristen Edge, owner of ArtPlay Creativity Studio and your host for each retreat.
In May 2025, we began a beautiful new chapter of hosting women’s art retreats at Lake Santeetlah, quietly nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina. It has been a joy to welcome women from across the country—and beyond—who feel drawn to nurture their creative spirit while connecting with other like-hearted souls. A few times each year, we gather in a stunning lakefront setting, surrounded by miles of preserved national forest shoreline, to reconnect with our innate creativity, explore new possibilities, and learn from artists who are passionate about sharing their gifts.
Since our first retreats in 2025, each gathering has brought its own special magic, shaped by the unique constellation of women who come together to create, explore, and connect. No two retreats are ever quite the same, yet each offers an invitation to slow down, make space for yourself, and discover what can unfold when creativity and community come together.
As we look ahead to our 2027 retreat season, I’m especially delighted to welcome Krista Brock back as a retreat artist and for you to learn with her! Krista brings a wonderful spirit of curiosity, play, and creative discovery to her workshops, and I can’t wait to share another special experience with you.
“The Most Amazing Trio”
This retreat was so special. Kristen has such a wonderful presence—she brings an artistic spirit, childlike wonder, and genuine warmth that make her so easy to be around.
She creates a welcoming atmosphere that grown women who had never met each other were dancing together on a boat at night by the light of the moon! I have taken countless classes and attended many different retreats, and this was by far the best. Kristen, Krista, and Dana (our retreat assistant) were the most amazing trio.
Krista has an extraordinary gift as a teacher. She nurtures, supports, and challenges her students while creating an environment where creativity can flourish. She somehow manages to say what’s in all of our heads, but always leads with positivity. She refuses to let frustration or negativity take over the room and continually guides her students back toward creative growth rather than judgment. She is also wonderfully authentic and down-to-earth. I hope to have as many opportunities to learn from her as possible!
And then there is Dana—the absolute perfect support system. She was an effortless host and right-hand woman, ready to step into whatever role was needed, always with her big, open, warm smile. Truly, can we clone her?
I’m absolutely in for next year! I’m happily exhausted after such a special time together and so grateful to have been part of it.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THIS RETREAT IS A GOOD FIT FOR ME?
You see art-making as a tool for self-nourishment, creative expression and joy.
You long for connection with other like-hearted souls, in a collaborative, non-judgmental atmosphere.
You find the idea of creating art, while immersed in a beautiful natural setting, inspiring.
You don’t mind- or you even relish- the idea of putting down the to-do list and dropping into a stretch of days filled will wonder, presence, creativity and connection.
You may have gone through a period of time where you felt disconnected from your creativity. Possibly due to perfectionist tendencies, or the constant pull to “do it all.” ~ ”After a major life shift, simplifying my creative practice with watercolor and acrylic inks became a path back to myself — noticing the small wonders, slowing down, and honoring curiosity. This retreat offers that same gift: space to return to your own creative heart, to explore, play, reflect, and reconnect with your inner voice.” ~ Krista
You value the creative process itself, and would enjoy being invited and inspired to tap into your own creative voice.
You’d love to learn from -and with- Krista - through her creative mediums and practices that she will share.
You look forward to a balance of time for art-making, time for connection, and down time to enjoy the beauty of the lake and the serenity of its surroundings.

“I loved the experience so much.”
My overall experience at this retreat was truly wonderful and special. It seemed so magical. We danced in the light of the Harvest Moon on the pontoon boat ride on the lake, created beautiful art, learned new art techniques and gentle movements for releasing unwanted energy and welcoming wonder through a deep appreciation of nature, especially on our hike through the forest. We journaled in the morning light on the lake. I went paddling in one of their kayaks, while Krista was paddling in her own kayak alongside me. Plus, the food was excellent and absolutely delicious! The accommodations were the best ever! We enjoyed the fireplace with the warmth it brought us while we chatted. I loved the experience of this entire retreat so much! It gave me a chance to unwind, relax, create, and reset. I highly recommend this trip to others considering participating in an ArtPlay with Krista Brock future retreat!
