Painting Flowers Abstractly, Saturday 05/09, 1PM-4PM with local artist Alison Press
A perfect spring art class or Mother’s Day weekend outing!
This beautiful workshop, created by Alison, is designed for creatives of all levels — especially beginners who are ready to explore abstract painting in an approachable, supportive environment. Whether you’re brand new to painting or have years of experience, you’ll be gently guided while also encouraged to trust your own creative instincts.
Working with acrylic paints, we’ll explore color, form, line, and value through bold brushstrokes, thick and thin lines, and playful, expressive interpretations of flowers on canvas. The focus will be on painting loosely, discovering your own abstract style, and most importantly — enjoying the process.
During class, Alison will guide you step by step in creating boldly painted flowers using a loose, abstract approach. We’ll begin with a quick charcoal sketch of a floral bouquet still-life directly on the canvas. This initial sketch is not meant to be detailed or precise — it simply serves as a relaxed starting point to help you begin confidently.
From there, you’ll start laying down fields of color and gradually build layers of paint, allowing your flower forms to emerge naturally. You’ll experiment with layering techniques, color combinations, and expressive mark-making. The paint will be handled loosely and abstractly — in line, form, and color — with many layers added as your composition evolves.
As you continue, your painting may shift and transform. It may become exaggerated, more abstract, or move away from the original bouquet reference entirely. You’ll have the freedom to refine your florals or lean further into abstraction by adding bold marks, gestural lines, and unexpected color choices. Each piece will develop according to your own desired effect.
The layering process will continue until your painting feels complete — whether it remains slightly recognizable as floral imagery or becomes wholly non-objective. Alison will offer individualized guidance and encouragement throughout, helping you feel supported while honoring your unique creative voice.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a vibrant, one-of-a-kind floral painting — and the confidence that comes from painting freely, expressively, and in community.
No experience is needed! All materials will be provided.
