Bloom into Abstraction ~ Acrylic Paints & Oil Pastels: Saturday 9/12, 1:00- 4:30 pm with local artist Alison Press
Come spend a joyful afternoon exploring the creative freedom that comes with interpreting blooms and flowers through color, texture, and playful mark-making. Whether you're picking up a paintbrush for the first time or you're an experienced artist looking to loosen up your creative practice, this workshop offers a welcoming space to experiment, explore, and create.
Local artist Alison Press will guide you through her approachable process for creating expressive, semi-abstract floral paintings, using acrylic paints, artist-grade oil pastels, paint markers, pencils, and a variety of papers and canvas. Fresh blooms will be available as inspiration, though you're also welcome to bring your own favorite flower photographs—or simply let your imagination lead the way.
With their incredible variety of shapes, colors, stems, and leaves, flowers are the perfect subject for creative exploration. There are no rules here—you have full artistic license to paint blooms in a way that feels joyful, expressive, and uniquely your own.
You’ll be invited to begin with a series of playful warm-up exercises and loose sketches - designed to help you become comfortable with the materials and quiet your inner critic. From there, Alison will introduce simple techniques for creating dynamic compositions while exploring color, value, layering, and expressive mark-making.
Each participant will receive a set of artist-grade oil pastels to use during class and take home, giving you the opportunity to continue creating long after the workshop ends.
Alison recommends bringing: Any photographs or images that inspire you, such as flowers, gardens, landscapes, or abstract shapes. These can serve as optional reference material throughout the workshop.
You'll leave with a one-of-a-kind painting—and perhaps even more importantly, renewed creative confidence, fresh inspiration, and the joy that comes from giving yourself permission to experiment, play, and discover what you love.
