Art Journal Alchemy, Saturday 1/31, 9:30am-4:00pm with guest artist Katrina Shoemaker
Are you someone who’s yearning to start an art journal practice, or maybe you already create in one but you’d love to actually have your own from- scratch, handmade journal?
1/31/26 9:30-4:00pm
In this full day workshop, guest artist Katrina Shoemaker will lead you in a fun step by step process of creating your very own - unique-to-you art journal! You will learn how to create “signatures” which are small booklets of papers that are sewn together. You’ll learn how to create beautiful covers using upcycled cardboard and decorative papers and finally you will create a beautiful fabric spine to hold it all together. These journals are specially designed to lay flat no matter where you open them. If you have ever worked in a journal of any kind, you know how important this is! At the end of our 3 hour morning session, you will have a completed art journal for you to create in for months or years to come!
In the afternoon, after our lunch break, Katrina will guide you in how to conquer the fear of working within the pristine new pages of your shiny new art journal! Usually the toughest part of working within the journal is just making that first mark!
Together, we will explore journal possibilities with an array of beautiful materials at your fingertips, working and playing with collage fodder, gellie prints (with acrylic paints), different types of ink pens and other tools for creating various styles of mark-making & more!
(we will break for lunch for 45-60 minutes - BYO lunch or walk to nearby cafes. A refrigerator is available on-site)
Optional ~ Sunday morning continuation
2/1/26 9:30-noon
In this add-on session we will build upon the afternoon lesson from the day before. We will learn how to create a background, a focal point and add a sentiment to a journal page. We will experiment with a variety of techniques and mediums, and I’ll teach you how to bring them all together to complete a full page in your new journal.
Please bring a favorite quote or saying with you if you have one!
If you would like to take the Sunday morning portion of this workshop you will simply include the “add-on” option (plus sign +) to your cart at checkout.
All materials are included for both days. No experience is needed!
