Come explore the quiet magic of landscape painting in Etheric Landscapes in Oil Paints—a class about creating landscapes that feel atmospheric, luminous, and just a little otherworldly.
We’ll begin with a demonstration exploring how to choose a landscape photograph with strong painting potential and how to translate what we see into a compelling composition. We’ll look at the way light moves through a landscape, what creates a sense of depth, and how colors shift and soften as they recede into the distance.
From there, we’ll experiment with the atmospheric qualities that give a landscape its etheric feeling—especially fog, mist, light, and subtle transitions of color. Along the way, you’ll learn how to lay paint onto the canvas, blend colors without creating mud, and build a painting with both intention and freedom.
Bring a few landscape photographs that inspire you, or choose from a selection of images provided in class. Together, we’ll look at the possibilities in each image and find the one that speaks to you as a painting.
You’ll learn a simple, organized approach to setting up your oil palette, with all of your colors laid out in a consistent way so you can begin to work intuitively and confidently.
Depending on your pace and how much detail you want to explore, you’ll have the opportunity to create one or two paintings during the class. There is room to work slowly and thoughtfully, or to embrace a more spontaneous approach and see what emerges.
No experience with oil painting is necessary. Come curious, bring your love of landscape, and let the atmosphere unfold.
