Ceramic Sound Vessels- History, Healing and Ancestry, Sunday 11/08, 10:00am -1:00pm with local artist Katie Croft
Join local artist, Katie Croft for this three-hour workshop, in which you will learn to create hand‑built sound vessels in the form of whistles and rattles. These small sculptural instruments—formed entirely by hand from clay—awaken when you breathe life into them. Their voices are simple and ancient, carrying sounds that can soothe, inspire, heal, and echo traditions that have connected people across cultures for thousands of years.
As you form your whistle or rattle, you’ll be invited to work with intention: listening, honoring what you hear, and allowing the clay to guide you toward a form that feels personal and alive. We’ll explore how sound and clay can heal and be a bridge — a way to ground, to remember, to reach forward and back. Clay and clay objects have a long and intimate history to modern day humans. Every culture across the world has used clay and sound in their daily lives and rituals as well as in their most precious and sacred spaces. We will explore this history together while we create.
Creating a whistle is both an art and a bit of a mystery. Sometimes they sing immediately, and sometimes they require a little patience and refinement. Katie will help you coax your instrument's voice to life, encouraging curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected along the way.
All materials are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. You're welcome to bring any favorite clay tools you'd like to use, though everything needed to create your sound vessel will be available.
You'll leave with a one-of-a-kind clay whistle or rattle, a deeper appreciation for the ancient relationship between clay and sound, and the quiet satisfaction that comes from creating something both sculptural and alive.
