Join us for a playful exploration of abstract florals as we discover the rich, expressive possibilities of professional-grade oil pastels. In this class, you'll be guided in creating vibrant blooms using intuitive mark-making, bold color, and layered textures that celebrate creativity over perfection.
Throughout the workshop, Alison will invite you to experience oil pastels as a creamy drawing tool and with mineral spirit solvents to create smoother painterly blooms. Together we'll explore techniques such as expressive mark-making, cross-hatching, blending, layering, impasto, and brush application, discovering how this unique medium beautifully bridges the worlds of drawing and painting.
Working on a variety of papers and canvas, you'll experiment with different surfaces to see how each one influences the character of your work. We'll also paint on dramatic black gessoed backgrounds, allowing the brilliant colors of the oil pastels to glow with remarkable depth and intensity.
Following in the creative footsteps of Pablo Picasso—who helped establish oil pastels as a fine art medium—you'll learn to embrace their versatility while developing your own expressive style. Using fresh, still life floral arrangements as our inspiration. The focus will be less on realism and more on capturing the essence of flowers through shape, movement, color, and joyful abstraction.
