In this expressive, beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll explore landscape painting through a loose, intuitive, and dreamlike abstract approach.
Inspired by the beauty of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, peaceful gardens, serene coastlines, or entirely imagined places, you’ll be encouraged to paint from both observation and imagination. Feel free to bring personal reference photos or magazine images that inspire you. Working intuitively is equally encouraged.
You’ll begin with a quick charcoal sketch directly on the canvas — not as a precise drawing, but as a gentle guide for shape, movement, and composition. From there, you’ll build layers of acrylic paint slowly and freely, allowing color, texture, line, and form to emerge organically throughout the process.
As your painting evolves, Alison will guide you in exploring expressive mark-making, layered color combinations, and playful experimentation with brushes and mixed tools.
Your painting may shift far beyond its original reference, becoming increasingly abstract, bold, atmospheric, or emotionally expressive along the way.
Alison will provide guidance on color relationships, composition, and technique within a supportive and encouraging environment. Most importantly, you’ll be invited to create fearlessly, trust your instincts, and move beyond perfection into a more freeing and authentic creative process.
You’ll leave with a deeply personal and one-of-a-kind landscape painting — rich with texture, emotion, imagination, and your own creative voice.
All levels welcome! Materials you will need are included.
